I think walls opens with this story because it was one of the first big events in her life. It was a big part in her life, it also shows alot about her father. Her father sneaks her out of the hospital and tells her that everything is safe is almost ironic. The hospital is one of the safest places you could possibly be, and with her parents, although makes her happy, is not always the safeset place to be. This also shows the level of trust between Jeanette and her father.
Having this outlook is good in ways such as the children are learning to be self-sufficient. They are learning that even though things are tough, there are things that you just need to deal with. It causes them to be careful, without the bubble wrap that most parents have. Rex and Rose give their children a chance to learn through experience. Some of the drawbacks are the rosks involed with letting them learn through experience. Jeanette got hurt, because she was 3 and cooking on the stove alone. There are always risks involved in learning.
