A Women On The Street
In this area of the novel we are introduced to our main character for the first time. She is in a taxi and noticed her mother rumaging throuugh the dumpster. From what we're told, the main character is not close with her mother, and doesn't accept her way of life. We learned that her mother chooses to live this way. She is happy with rumging through dumpsters, she tells her daughter not ot be embarassed of they way her parents choose to live.
The Desert
In this chapter we go back in time to when Jeannette is a little girl, living in a trailer park. She is cooking hot dogs by herself at the age of 3, nothing seems to be a problem until she catches on fire. Her parents take her to the hospital where her burns are taken care of. Jeanetter enjoys the hosptial, she has TV and tries chewing gum for the first time. After a few weeks in the hospital her father sneakes her out of the hospital.
A few days after she was home from the hospital she was back cooking hotdogs. Little did she realize that the fire event didn't really scare her. It only made her like fire more.
In the middle of the night Jeanettes father comes into her room and tells her she have 15 minutes to get everything she needs to survive, and that the family was leaving. Jeanettes explains that this happens on a regulr basis, and how her father makes up crazy stories on how the mafia was coming after them. They pulled over on the side of the road in the desert and slept there.
Jeanettes explains in more detail about how they've moved around. About how they go to little town and find houses for rent and wen the unpayed bills start to pile up, they just up and leave in the middle of the night. Her dad calls it the skedaddle. She talks about how she likes the desert, how she learns new thing. She knows how to shoot a gun, and a bow and quiver, she can hunt for water and find food. She is a resourceful little girl.
At this point Jeanette and her family are still in the car driving around. Jeanette is excited because she has a mounds candy bar. she also falls out of the car. Her parents drive off unaware that Jeanette is no longer in the car.
Jeanette and her family are living in a motel in Las Vegas. Her father goes to the casino all day and has good luck. One night Jeanette wake up to her motel room being on fire. She gets nervous and wakes her siblings, while her father rushes in after his children.
After the fire the family drove aroudn adn decided to go to the Mojave desert. Her mother gets facinated by a Joshua tree. So they decided to stay so her mother can paint the tree. Her father apears as a very big support group for Jeanette. When she thinks there something under her bed, her dad gets his knife and tells her shes strong.
Jeanette's family is a very poor family. So when it comes to holidays like Chistmas, the kids were always told that there was no such thing as Santa Claus. For christmas this year their father told them they could each pick a star, and that would be their present.
In this chapter Jeanettes mother is pregnant with their 4th child. Jeanette is now enrolled in school, where she gets into a fight because the other girls in her class don't like her eagerness to learn. Jeanette fights back and so does her brother. Her mother has a baby girl. They name her Lilly.
A few months later when the family was in the car, a cop was trying to pull them over, their father decided to flee, after finally losing the cop, they ditch their car, and decided that they need to move again. They rented a U-haul truck and the kids had to pile into the back.
